Am I really at risk for getting a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD/STI)?
- If you are sexually active (includes anal & oral sex, mutual masturbation and intercourse)...you are at risk.
- Each year 9 million new cases of STDs occur among young people ages 15-24. Sexually active youth have the highest STD rates of any age group in the country.
By age 25, one-half of all sexually active young people get anSTD.
While anyone who is sexually active is at risk for getting an STD, women, youth and people of color are more likely to become infected. They can also face more serious medical complications.
Will using a condom keep me safe from getting an STD/STI?
Condoms do not prevent the transmission of STDs from any area that is not covered directly by the condom.

Why are Teens at a Higher Risk for getting an STD/STI?
Teens are at a Higher Risk for getting an STD/STI, because their bodies are still developing physically and the younger a person is when they become sexually active, the more sexual partners they are likely to have. Multiple sexual partners greatly increase risk of contracting STDs.
- Most STD/STIs occur in peolple under the age of 25.
- Approximately 12,000 teens become infected with an STD/STI DAILY in the U.S.
- Chlamydia and Gonorrhea are more common among teens ages 15-19 than any other age group.
