How many STD/STIs are there and What are they?

There are approximately 25 different STD/STIs, but some of these diseases can have up to 60 different strains of one infection.

Most common STD/STIs include:

  • Clamydia                
  • Gonorrhea
  • HPV
  • Hepatitis B
  • Herpes
  • HIV
  • Syphilis
  • Trichomoniasis

Bacterial STD/STIs- Are curable and early treatment reduced their spread, as well as serious medical complications. (i.e.: gonorrhea & Chlamydia)

Viral STD/STIs- Can be effectively treated, however there is no cure for viral infections. (i.e.:HIV, HPV & Herpes)

STD/STIs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases/Infections) refer to a variety of bacterial, viral and parasitic infections that are acquired through sexual activity.

They are caused by 25 infectious organisms. As more organisms are identified the number of STD/STIs continue to climb.

How do I know if I have a Sexually Transmitted Disease or Infection (STD, STI) ?

Most people who have an STD have no symptoms. Only a test from your local health clinic or doctor may be the only way to tell if you're infected.

What can happen if I am sexually active and I don't get tested for STD/STIs?

If not treated some STD/STIs can lead to serious medical problems, including infertillity, vital body organ damage, tubal pregnancy, medical problems for unborn/newborn babies, chronic pai and cervical cancer and death (HIV).

What can I do to keep from getting an STD/STI and/or becoming Pregnant?

Abstinence is the only form of protection that is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy and Sexually Transmitted Infections.

Abstinence: the conscious decision of an individual not to have any intimate physical contact for the purpose of sexual gratification until he or she is in a committed marital relationship.
